La componente dell'esperienza diretta delle cose è fondante nell'immagine fotografica. Tutto origina dalla presenza del fotografante di fronte al fenomeno. Non è tuttavia sufficiente perché da questo derivi un'immagine di qualche interesse. Senza un percorso di sistemazione compositiva e concettuale, l'immagine rimane inerte e silente. L'inerzia è sterile e va quindi rimossa già in fase di ripresa ovvero con un successivo intervento sul visivo e sui concetti che governano l'immagine. Il silenzio è invece bene che resti tale.
